Rory McCarthy – Chairman
Rory McCarthy worked in investment banking between 1984-92, first with W I Carr, then as a Director of the Swiss Bank Corporation and finally as Head of Global Sales for Asia Equity Ltd, a South East Asian Brokerage, which subsequently merged with Banque Paribas.
On leaving banking, Rory established a conglomerate that included 4 joint ventures with Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Group, including an investment of STG 85 million to acquire 33% of Virgin’s music business.
He was also one of the original backers and 33% shareholder of the hugely successful Wagamama Restaurant Group, which was recently sold for STG 250 million.
Between 2003 and 2013, Rory worked as an independent ‘gate guardian’ for a UK based hedge fund with $120 Billion under management. His role was to source, negotiate, manage and dispose of investments in emerging markets.
Under the hedge fund’s banner, Rory executed deals in excess of $1 Billion, which proved to be hugely successful, generating an average IRR of 22% per annum.
In particular, Rory was instrumental in the restructuring of Bangkok Land, a virtually bankrupt company quoted on the Stock Exchange of Thailand. Through his efforts, Bangkok Land went from strength to strength, growing from a market capitalisation of $140 million to $1.2 Billion in just 6 years, and with a balance sheet that is now debt free.
Rory was also jointly responsible for raising $250 million for a large residential development in Gurgaon in India, consisting of 1445 apartments spread over 29 high rise towers. This project is one of the most prestigious and successful property developments in Delhi.
Rory has over 30 years experience in venture capital and corporate finance. He has worked with companies from all over the world, investing, raising finance, orchestrating takeovers and mergers, executing restructurings.
He has invested in a number of businesses ranging from property, hotels, restaurants, leisure, telecommunications and IT and helped launch such names as Wagamama, Smollensky’s Balloon, V2 Music, Victory Corporation and Q-ZAR.
Rory has sat on the Boards of several public and private companies, most notably as a Director of Victory Corporation plc, Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin branded cosmetics and clothing company, as well as a Director of Branson’s record label V2 Music Holdings plc.
Rory has succeeded in forging close relationships with many institutional investors, captains of industry and politicians worldwide.
